“Hey David, what factors do you consider when assessing applications?” - Saulo from Brazil
Well Saulo, that’s a big question, however, this is something we do every day, so here goes. We subscribe to the notion that IT should partner with the business. We need to understand what the business values and what applications are driving the processes & services that deliver that value.
All too often, we try to be a service provider to the business and end up creating an unhealthy set of silos and processes that detract from what should be a common goal of service delivery to stakeholders.
Interestingly, In order to identify candidates for modernization, it’s not enough to solely look at the technical complexity of the existing applications, we need to also quantify the value to the business provided by each application.
We start by identifying the goals of a particular project which can include improved development velocity, financial cost reduction and/or improved security amongst others. Then, on an app by app basis, the cloud architect reviews the value, such as revenue generated, person-hours saved or regulatory requirements. She then combines that with a review of technical complexity data such as, source code complexity, database migration complexity, application dependencies, server dependencies and server operating system migration complexities. With both the business value and the technical complexity, she can then make recommendations that support the overall objectives identified for the project.

- Army Takes New Steps to Stop Hackers - the U.S. army seems to get it - making it easier to get their data through the cloud means better missions, faster intel, and hopefully keeping people safe!
- New End-to-End Platform uses AI and Distributed Tracing to Secure Cloud-Native apps - Jyoti Bansal, CEO of Traceable, saw a significant increase in cloud-native architecture adoption, and wanted to try and reduce any additional risk by making it possible to ID malicious users. Good to see a new way to keep your cloud-native apps safe.
